Proteins in a cat's saliva and urine as well as dried flakes of skin, also known as dander are the culprits in cats that make humans so allergic. The symptoms of cat allergies are coughing, hives or a rash, red and itchy eyes, runny, stuffy or itchy nose and sneezing. Those who are allergic to cats may also notice redness of the skin where a cat has licked or bitten or scratched.

Symptoms of cat allergies normally come on pretty suddenly and are fairly obvious.
