Cat Skin Allergies

Your Vet Can Help You Treat Cat Skin Allergies So Your Kitty Will Feel Better.

Your poor pet cat may suffer from cat skin allergies and you don't want to see him suffer. The first thing you should do is to get that kitty to the veterinarian. Cats can have allergies the same as humans do. The unfortunate thing for them, however, is that they can't tell us what they're feeling. We have to be on the look-out for symptoms of cat skin allergies. The three major symptoms of cat skin allergies are scratching, licking and chewing. When a cat continues to do these activities, they can lead to other symptoms of cat skin allergies such as swelling, hair loss, sores, scales, redness, inflammation, rashes, lip ulcers and even ear infections.

The cat's head and front quarter of the body will be affected first by the cat skin allergies, and then if left untreated, can spread to the whole body. There are three major types of cat skin allergies. They are flea allergy dermatitis, inhalant/contact allergies and food allergies. The flea allergy is caused by a flea's saliva left on the cat's skin after biting him. The inhalant/contact allergy is caused by absorbing or inhaling any allergen such as pollen or mold through the skin. This can cause dermatitis.

The food allergies are caused by certain ingredients in a cat food that can actually cause cat skin allergies. The veterinarian will need to do testing to find out what is causing the cat skin allergies. He will take blood samples, skin testing by injecting a histamine and a small amount of saline. The food allergies will put the cat on a hypoallergenic diet to see what foods are causing the cat skin allergies. Then the vet will determine how to treat the cat skin allergies. There are shots, ointments, creams, antibiotics and antihistamines that can be used in accordance to which type of allergies are present.
